Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada but grew up in the United States. She has worked as media critic since. She founded Feminist Frequency, a site which features video and posts discussing the depictions of females in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American journalist and critic who has been awarded prizes for her work, is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency explores how women are represented in the popular media. Dispelling stereotypes of women is the main goals of her work. In addition, Sarkeesian discusses issues of targeted harassment against women online and for other groups who have been excluded. Sarkeesian holds a York University master's in social philosophy, political and philosophical thinking. In addition to being an acclaimed public speaker she has made speeches at the TEDxWomen The XOXO Conference as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. She has been interested in the gender issue and feminist movements from a very young stage of her life. In 2009, when she was in university she launched the Feminist Frequency web site. The ambitious lady planned to launch a web series examining gender representation in video games and was the subject of an online harassment campaign. Her determination was not slowed from the attack, and the fact is that it only bolstered her desire to become feminist and media critic. In recognition of the many contributions she has made to feministism, she's the recipient of numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for several years and was the creator of Feminist Frequency. This non-profit educational organization studies women's roles in the pop-culture narratives.
